Petitions on his plate
POOR Mr Blair!
He has got a lot on his plate, hasn’t he?
I was looking for the online petition that’s urging the prime minister to give Stephen Oake, the detective constable killed in the line of duty in Manchester, a GC when I took a closer look at the official website.
Mr Blair kindly lets anyone set up a petition on the website.
There are things there such as not replacing Trident, increasing penalties for use of mobile phones when driving and scrapping plans for ID cards.
Then there are more dubious ones, such as “We the undersigned petition the prime minister to endorse a scheme that would see the child benefit scheme extended to cats”.
Another suggests that we should replace the National Anthem with Gold by Spandau Ballet. More than 700 had signed when I looked.
So does Mr Blair look at them all to keep his finger on the pulse of popular opinion. Or does Downing Street simply ignore them?
I do hope not. I couldn’t resist signing one that calls on him to end broadcasts of Quote Unquote on Radio 4.
Look at http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/ and I bet you won’t be able to resist signing something or starting your own.
