A funny sense of humour

TALKING of the legacy the British have left in their colonies . . . I was amazed to see what was running five nights a week on Cypriot television.

Fresh Fields, an ITV situation comedy from the eighties, which had ditchwater-dull situations and barely discernible comedy.

In four-channel Britain it got great ratings. But then anything did on ITV in those days.

For anyone who harks back to a golden age of television, it makes sobering viewing.

Even now, when the search for an assistant for someone who did not win a “reality” television show is made into a programme – Jade’s PA on Living TV – Fresh Fields repeats cannot find a slot here.
